Educational Visits to Anglesey Archives

Visits for school and college groups to Anglesey Archives are available throughout the year.

We offer a range of workshops exploring themes linked to the collections held at the archives. Visits include a guided tour of the archives building, including our POD storage facility, research room, 'Behind the Scenes' and access to our learning space.

During a visit students can examine original documents such as photographs, maps, logbooks and newspapers relevant to your theme. Workshops can be tailored to meet your requirements and to complement in class learning. Due to the capacity of the archives building and the POD storage facility, numbers per visit are limited to 25 pupils.

The following are examples of some of the most popular educational workshops:

World War Two: Anglesey Life on the Home Front

Looking at a range of documents, maps and photographs children will learn about the history of the local area during World War Two. Students will make their own evacuee tag, learn about rationing and what life was like on Anglesey during this time. To complement this workshop the homefront, front line and evacuee handling collections can be introduced.

Crime and Punishment

This workshop uses the collections of Anglesey Archives to examine historical punishments, Beaumaris Gaol, policing on Anglesey and how the penal system has changed. The Quarter Session documents can also supplement this workshop and documents relating to specific crimes or catchment areas can be selected. This visit also includes the opportunity to explore items from our crime and punishment handling and costumes collection.

The Victorian Era

During this visit there is an opportunity to explore photographs that document aspects of life around Anglesey during the Victorian Era. This workshop can be tailored to each specific school and catchment area; this can include the use of maps and school logbooks. This visit can also be complemented by the use of our Victorian school, toys or home handling collections. There is also a selection of Victorian themed costumes available for use.

The Royal Charter

Through photographs, postcards and parish records students will learn about the tragic history of the Royal Charter. A bespoke workshop booklet is available for students to complete during their visit, and our unique Royal Charter handling collection can be explored.

1960s

Through the examination of a collection of newspapers, documents and photographs children will learn about life in 1960s Anglesey. This workshop can be tailored to include major events of the decade including space advancements and the drowning of Tryweryn, as well as day to day life in Wales at this time. The use of the 1960s handling collection can also be included with this session.

'Cynefin' - My Square Mile

This workshop can be developed in line with the themes being explored in the classroom. Students will investigate their 'cynefin' through looking at a bespoke selection of documents, photographs, maps and postcards from the across the archive's collections.
