Portrait of Leonard McComb

Leonard McComb RA was born in Glasgow in 1930. He studied at the College of Art in Manchester and in 1961 attained a post graduate degree in sculpture at the Slade School of Art.

A versatile artist, McComb produced paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, mosaics and tapestries.

He taught art at several institutions, including Oxford Brookes University, Sir John Cass College, Slade School of Fine Art, Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths College, and in 1974 he founded the Sunningwell School of Art, Oxford.

As a celebrated artist, his work was displayed in galleries both in the UK and internationally. He was elected as an associate of the Royal Academy in 1987 and became a full member in 1991. In 1995 he was elected Keeper of the Royal Academy, giving him responsibility for the Royal Academy Schools until 1998.

His mother lived in Benllech and he often stayed with her in her bungalow overlooking the sea. The east coast of Anglesey was a great inspiration to him, and he produced many works here. He lived and worked in his studio in Brixton London until he passed away in 2018.

In 2020, a large selection of his Anglesey related works was kindly donated to Oriel Môn’s art collection by his sister, Anne Draycott. We are currently planning a retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work which will be shown in the Kyffin Williams Gallery in 2025.
