Song of the wild

I was brought up in North Wales and have always enjoyed climbing mountains and walking the land especially in Eryri national park. I search out remote wild places in search of peace, silence and the spirituality of an unspoilt natural landscape and it is these which form the basis of my exhibition ‘Song of the wild’. My home now is on a hillside looking out on the Rhinogau to the west and Cader Idris to the south with farmland, deciduous woodland and the Coed y Brenin below and an extensive blanket bog just above and so am fortunate to have a variety of landscapes to draw inspiration from close by.

I paint emotionally and intuitively with big brushes and often on a large scale usually with oils. Painting en plein air beside waterfalls, under cliffs, on blanket bogs, beside the estuaries and high on mountainsides involves much physical effort and organisation (and a big brolly!) but appeals to my need to be outside in the natural world and also heightens the senses and allows the unexpected to appear eg.a glint of unexpected colour or a shaft of sunlight. Beyond everything I want my art to serve a deep purpose as I try to highlight the intricate and fragile beauty of the environment and its diverse habitats, so hopefully inspiring the viewer to appreciate and protect them and the wildlife that depends on them.

I feel very privileged to have lived much of my life in Wales and I hope my love for my beautiful homeland shows through my paintings.

I have exhibited my work widely in the UK with two large solo exhibitions in 2020 and 2022 and recently in joint shows with the Royal Society of British Artists and the Ingdiscerning Eye at the Mall galleries in London where I was awarded the Welsh Regional Prize.
